Apprenticeship the way to go for Callan

Callan McCulloch is an Engineering (Mechanical) apprentice working on site at Esso Australia – Longford (Sale). Callan decided to pursue a career in engineering as it falls in line with interests outside of his apprenticeship. When he isn’t working, Callan is operating his small business specialising in automotive fabrication.

Developing his knowledge and skills in the workplace has given Callan the opportunity to gain valuable insights from his colleagues, many whom have been in the industry for longer than him, and have a vast array of experience (something Callan and other apprentices benefit from). They continue to share their tips and tricks of the trade that Callan highlights you wouldn’t learn in a classroom, whether they are industry specific or not. Working with his colleagues and the many people across site is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his apprenticeship.

When asked what he thinks the benefits of undertaking a Vocational Educational Training (VET) pathway, Callan says, “Personally, I think an apprenticeship is the way to go. If you land a good job and you manage to obtain further learnings from your employer, you are going to be miles ahead in your chosen occupation and industry. It will also benefit you financially as well.”

Callan’s words of advice to those looking to pursue a career through an apprenticeship in a trade is, “Do it. As long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort to reap the rewards, it’s worth it.”

Once he completes his apprenticeship, Callan hopes to continue working for Esso Australia as a qualified Mechanical Fitter and Turner, along with continuing with his afterhours automotive fabrication business.
