WPC Group Apprentices Excel at Regional WorldSkills Australia Competition

Two of WPC Group’s promising apprentices, Brendan Anthonisen and James Binotto, both apprentices at Esso, demonstrated exceptional skills at the Regional WorldSkills Australia Competition, securing second place in their respective categories of Turning and Fitting. This esteemed competition, which has been championing skills excellence in various technical and service-oriented careers since 1981, not only promotes vocational excellence but also connects over 100,000 participants with industry leaders.

During the challenging competition, James was tasked with fabricating and machining all components based on specific drawings, assembling them with great precision. Brendan’s challenge involved machining components strictly according to the technical drawings, with both competitors judged on the accuracy and quality of the final products. Reflecting on his experience, James said, “The time constraint to produce the chain and sprocket block presented a new challenge, but I utilised my experience at Esso to complete it precisely.” Brendan added, “It was a great opportunity to test my skills and understanding of the trade. The support from Esso was crucial in pushing us to enhance our abilities.”

Their success in the competition is a testament to the comprehensive training provided by the WPC Group apprenticeship program, which has enabled many apprentices to secure highly sought-after positions within the industry.

Looking forward, both apprentices are poised to join Team Vic for the upcoming 2025 WorldSkills Australia Nationals in Brisbane. TAFE Gippsland announced the selection of a total of 16 students from various regions, including Binotto and Anthonisen. Alex Terranova, Head of Department for Emerging Industries and Trades at TAFE Gippsland, lauded their achievements, highlighting the high quality of work and exceptional scores that led to their selection. He commended the dedication of the staff, whose guidance has been instrumental in nurturing these young talents.

As these apprentices prepare for the national stage, their journey continues to inspire other young individuals considering a vocational path, underscoring the importance of apprenticeships in developing skilled, confident professionals ready to meet industry demands.
